Reporters have always rushed to file stories ahead of the competition, but the explosion of media outlets has changed the way news is reported and the way companies must respond. More than ever, this is a 24-hour business. Dow Jones just went to a 24-hour schedule and Bloomberg already has a great track record of breaking stories at anytime of the day or night. A proliferation of broadcast and Internet financial programs and web sites have made it easy for investors to check their favorite news sources at any time.
Investors and consumers are now offered dozens of ways to get information. If they choose to receive it from their daily newspapers, most are now available online as well as on doorstep. The electronic version of the paper offers added functionality such as archives, discussion rooms, links to relevant articles, and web pages, and an e-mail function that allows them to comment easily on the article they just read.
In addition, there are a number of search engines available offering an even easier path to favorite internet sites. Infopath, Microsoft Explorer, Pointcast and other services allow subscribers to submit reading habits, publications of interest, and topics of concern, into their database and are automatically sent information that will be of interest to that individual subscriber. No more wading through mountains of text. Quick easy and downloadable for reading at a later time.
The Wall Street Journal is the first major daily publication to pursue a subscriber based Internet site. WSJ Interactive offers the daily news of the print edition but on a more timely schedule. You can log into WSJ Interactive and find updates to print articles, links to other sites, comments from the reporter, forums, and articles specifically for the Online publication, that are not in the print edition. And again, that powerful search engine changes the way investors get information. No longer are readers slave to newsprint or expensive Nexis searches. They can now log onto areas of interest and sift through the articles delivered at their convenience.
Other sites such as the Washingtonpost.com and LAtimes.com offer little more than the print business sections, though that's changing. The Washington Post has newsmaker forums and links to other business site. And both offer the ability to search through past issues.
Wire Services
Bloomberg entered the arena against venerable opponents such as the Associate Press, Reuters and Dow Jones News Service, and forever changed the landscape of financial reporting. Much more than a wire service, Bloomberg is a multimedia explosion of financial news. When your CEO is interviewed by a Bloomberg reporter, remember that the interview will probably appear in a number of different mediums. In addition to standard editorial boards and print interviews, their offices have audio and broadcast capabilities as well. The Bloomberg Forum has become a favored platform for CEOs and newsmakers for its reach via TV news stations, radio stations and the Bloomberg terminals.
Bloomberg reporters do everything they can to be the first with the news. They've shaken up other news organizations to the point where other wire services and dailies don't even want to discuss Bloomberg. When they do, they acknowledge that they have good people, who are aggressive, after that everything's off-the-record.
While they have more flexible deadlines than their print brethren, they do have to comply with the needs of the newspapers that use their service. Bloomberg wire stories are picked up in 800 newspapers worldwide. That doesn't mean, however, that if a story breaks late in the day or on the weekend they won't run it. The ubiquitous Bloomberg Terminals are on the desks of more than 185,000 leading financial professionals and organizations, broadcasting 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Dow Jones, the sister service to the Wall Street Journal, is still a favored source for financial information. Using different reporters than the Journal, Dow Jones has incredible reach and depth covering every industry and market out there. Recently moved from the New York headquarters to New Jersey, Dow now reports continuously from 5:00 p.m. on Sunday to 9:00 p.m. on Friday.
Online Publications
The Street.Com is one of a new breed of online publications trying to capitalize on the flexibility of the medium, while bringing the credibility of talented reporters from publications like the Wall Street Journal and Smart Money. The publication covers beats ranging from banks, mutual funds, and stocks to the business side of sports.
Unlike their print ancestors, the online prodigy have the advantage of timeliness. They can update a story at anytime of the day or night, and continue to update it throughout the day. According to Dave Kansas, executive editor and former Wall Street Journal staff writer, "this medium offers the immediacy of TV with the depth of print journalism. We can publish 24 hours a day, seven days a week." The Street.com publishes four stories throughout the day - morning/pre-market opening; midday; end of day; Evening roundup at 7:00 or 7:30. They put out a new edition each night, with at least 5 new stories.
They take full advantage of their medium. If a story breaks early in the day they will release a comprehensive article, complete with links to relevant web pages that afternoon, while daily newspapers can't put it out until following day.
One difference between up and coming publications like this, that are trying to bring the credibility of national print publications to the web, and services like Bloomberg and The Associated Press, is direct connection with the end user - the investor. Bloomberg and AP are picked up by publications worldwide and read by millions, but they are not seen by most people until they reach your local paper.
And of course, let's not forget one of the most popular online sources for financial information, the Motley Fool. Not your typical financial news service, actually not even a news service, more like the old town square. The Fool is opinionated, outspoken and highly influential. By now you are all probably familiar with the Fool's love of a then little known company called Iomega. As part of the Fools portfolio and widely discussed on their extremely active forums, the stock went from a low of $10 to $55 1/8 in 3 months.
While discounted by many on Wall Street, the Motley Fool is followed closely by novice and professional investors alike. They have reporters who cover a range of issues, and their slant is populist and anti-Wall Street. They believe in empowering the small investor through cyberspace.
Even long lead-time monthly magazines like Money are getting online fever. Money Magazine launched a highly successful daily newsservice, Money Online. The site receives about 200,000 hits monthly. A staff of reporters assigned to the online publication track timely events with comprehensive coverage. They archive all of the daily articles for easy searching, and have begun to add interviews with newsmakers complete with digitized photos. According to Mary Gotschall, a frequent contributor to the site, a reporter can get an assignment at 10:00 am and have to submit it by 5:00p.m. for editing. As they make edits the reporter may need to call more sources later in the day.
The bottom line for companies and individuals working with the press is the need to be more vigilant, more resourceful and always on the ready because you never know when the right opportunity is going to come along to tell your company's story. It also means you have to be careful of inaccuracies. Once one makes it into a story, it can have a long and extended shelf life.
Reporters want to reach you immediately. Don't be surprised if a print reporter calls you at 7:00 on a Sunday for an article to appear on Monday. Or if they want it for their online edition, they can call at anytime. If you are in media relations, make sure they can reach you wherever you are. If you're the CEO of a company this might not be so practical, but remember they will write the story with or without you, so in most cases its better to be part of the story.
