Davos - Congress Center: The scene in the plenary hall before Condoleezza Rice spoke reminded me of entering the Tokyo subway at rush hour. Hundreds of world leaders jammed together and pushing forward as the doors to the main hall opened.
Rice gave a rousing speech and then was joined on stage by Tony Blair, Jamie Dimon, Henry Kissinger and others - to discuss global warming, Middle East, the need for education in the world's poorest regions. Rice promoted what she called "American Realism" in approaching a number of thorny issues - including "cutting the gordian knot of fuel issues."
A few issues seem to dominate conversation - mainly the economy, but climate change is right up there. Even the CEO of China Mobile mentioned it in his remarks as an issue that must be addressed now.
The conversation in the Tech forum was about mobility - and where are we going with convergence. John Markoff of the NY Times moderated the session - and covered a lot of ground - including his question - is the power in technology shifting from Silicon Valley. Randall Stephenson (ATT & T CEO) and Bill Amelio (Lenovo) both commented on the growing tech and innovation coming from emerging markets.
During the q & a one guy stood up and asked if Stephenson could fix his iPhone because it didn't work in Europe...
