Short term pessimism, long term optomism
January 25, 2008

Davos day two continued full speed ahead. Steve Hamm of BusinessWeek spoke to Chairman Yang of Lenovo about growth prospects - Lenovo at a Crossroads

Participated in a great exercise in futurism sponsored by CNBC and Infosys. The program was led by futurists Paul Saffoand Peter Schwartz ( author of Art of the Long View - and coming out with a new book this month - Why you should be optomistic for your children)

Each table was given a year and potential scenario for that year. Lots of interesting and at times bizarre predictions.

Some of the more interesting predictions for years 2014-2020
-People are divided by preferences rather than geographic divisions, making governments seem largely irrelevant.
-Air travel becomes restricted due to carbon footprints. Oil rises to $500 a barrel.
- China and India fend off increasing African competition.
-The last book is published; only digital material from now on.
- 35% of surgery is performed remotely by surgeons in emerging countries operating surgical equipment robotically for Western hospitals.

Kishore Mahbubani was at our table - from the University of Singapore - his new book is coming out later this month - The New Asian Hemisphere: The Irresistible Shift of Global Power to the East

Another interesting panel discussion on social innovation sponsored by CNBC. Speaking - Bill Amelio (Lenovo); next to him Aditya Mittal (Arcelor Mittal) and Patricia Russo (Alcatel-Lucent) - moderator Simon Hobbs, CNBC
